12/12/2023 0 Comments Nutty putty cave 3d mapJosh Jones, John Jones’s younger brother, offered a statement of gratitude to rescue workers. The crevice is not named, mainly because it is too small for most cavers to reach and map. The area he was stuck in was an offshoot from the main path on the southeast side at the end of the cave. Jones became trapped in the cave around 8:45 p.m. “It will be, as they described it, a sacred place to them,” Cannon said. An important point for family and rescuers is that Jones’s resting place remain undisturbed. Officials from several agencies will meet Monday morning to discuss the best way to seal the cave, and a uniformed deputy will be guarding the entrance until the cave has been permanently closed. Though plans have not been finalized on how the cave will be closed, officials say there will be a spot reserved for Jones’s family to erect a memorial for him. “With that in mind it has been decided that the cave will be permanently closed to all access.” “Because of where he is located in the cave and the danger involved in accessing that area, we have determined that the risk involved in removing John from the cave is too high,” said Utah County sheriff’s Sgt. Officials announced Friday afternoon that the cave will be permanently closed and sealed, and rescue workers will no longer attempt to remove Jones’s body. I wish it was possible for someone to travel back in time and change the course of the accident too :(.The Nutty Putty Cave, where John Edward Jones spent the last nearly 28 hours of his life, will also be his final resting place. Unfortunately he was still a long way from being out of the tunnel and cave when he passed. I haven’t seen any information on it from reliable sources, but for his sake I hope I missed it and they were able to. I am pretty sure they were not able to actually get the IV to him, just that they had one ready. They did bring small drills down to set up a pulley system but the drills couldn’t be used to make the tunnel wider as it would have taken too long and the debris could have posed additional risks. To answer your questions, they didn’t get him out any more than about 1 foot, as he could only assist enough to scoot back a couple inches at a time.Īs OP said, due to the extremely narrow size, rescuers couldn’t bring equipment like a portable Jack hammer down into the tunnel John Jones was in. I know I’m just finding your comment a year later but just in case you’re still interested:įirst, I would suggest reading the National Speleological Society’s report on the accident for a reliable source on the details: Thanks for all of your answers on this.once we're able to live our lives normally again I plan on visiting to Oregon caves to take a stab at lowering my own claustrophobia.we'll see how this goes. Either way, do you know the answers to the following?ġ.) The tunnel that John was stuck in.it's my understanding that it began immediately with an upward ascent followed by an almost immediate descent, which by itself sounds like it would have been incredibly difficult for him to back out of, but I keep hearing it described as a corkscrew-do you know if it was an actual twisting corkscrew-type of tunnel? Just trying to get an idea of how difficult the rescue would have been.Ģ.) The scout/kid (not sure if they were a scout) who got stuck immediately before John-was he in the same area as John? If so I really wonder why they hadn't closed off that area immediately afterwards, especially if it was known to be impassible, but obviously hindsight is 20/20. To clarify, were you ever in Nutty Putty? For whatever reason I get the impression you were, but I could be wrong. r/alpinism Take hiking to the high slopes Please join the NSS, find your local grotto (cave club) to learn caving and cave locations.įind a caving group in your own country: International Union of Speleology No pictures of cavers without helmets or doing anything else unsafe.Do not POST cave locations (to avoid vandalism and accidents).
